What is Asbestos?

You may be aware of asbestos as a health hazard but aren't sure exactly what it is. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber but also a known carcinogen that can cause respiratory disease. Asbestos use is not totally banned in the U.S. It is currently legal to manufacture certain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and some ACMs are still being imported today. Asbestos fibers have been added to many different building materials, regardless of when construction took place.

Rockies Environmental & Demolition Services Inc offers professional asbestos abatement and removal services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (720) 230-1045 for a FREE estimate today!

Do You Need Asbestos Abatement?

Asbestos was once recognized for its heat resistance, strength, versatility and insulating properties. It has been used in many construction applications over the years, including acoustic ceilings, roofing materials, vinyl flooring, plaster walls, duct insulation and more.

In the mid-1970s, the EPA banned asbestos due to concerns over the health effects of exposure to carcinogenic asbestos fibers. These health issues included fibrotic lung disease, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Here in Colorado, the laws are specific about disturbing asbestos-containing materials (ACM) during any renovation project. Asbestos removal is required if you exceed certain trigger levels:

  • Single-Family Residential Dwellings – 50 linear feet on pipes; 32 square feet on other surfaces; or the volume equivalent of a 55-gallon drum.
  • Commercial Buildings – 260 linear feet on pipes; 160 square feet on other surfaces; or the volume equivalent of a 55-gallon drum.

Rockies Environmental & Demolition Services offers our asbestos abatement services in case your structure is damaged by flood, fire or other emergency situations, or you are remodeling or renovating and older home or commercial space.

Health Effects From Exposure to Asbestos

Exposure to asbestos can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Generally, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing health problems due to it. Symptoms can take years to develop following exposure.

Asbestos-related conditions can be difficult to identify. Your healthcare provider can identify the possibility of asbestos exposure and related health issues such as lung disease with a thorough medical history. This includes looking at your medical, work, cultural and environmental history.

If your doctor suspects an asbestos-related health condition, they can use a number of tools to make an actual diagnosis. This includes a physical examination, chest X-ray and pulmonary function tests. You may also be referred to a specialist who treats diseases caused by asbestos.

Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure are:

  • Asbestosis – A serious progressive, long-term, non-cancer disease of the lungs
  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma – A rare form of cancer found in the thin lining of the lung, chest and the abdomen and heart

Our Asbestos Abatement Process

Our remediation team at Rockies Environmental & Demolition Services will develop and follow a plan for how the area will be treated, including the preparation and cleanup process. This includes strict adherence to all local, state and federal laws. Our asbestos abatement plan includes:

  • Proper demarcation: We clearly mark the hazardous area and prevent occupants from entering the area until the process is complete and clearance testing is performed.
  • Prepping the work area: Air ducts are sealed off, the HVAC system is disabled and all other areas are securely sealed off with plastic sheets and treated with air filtration.
  • Removing material: Our highly trained specialists wear protective clothing and respirators to protect themselves while they work. Additionally, they use hand tools and wet methods to remove or repair the asbestos components. The removed asbestos is placed into waste disposal bags, and sealed and removed through a decontamination unit designed with a protective lining.
  • HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuuming: Our teams use special HEPA filtration vacuums which are specifically designed for asbestos removal to minimize any dispersing of asbestos fibers during the work and for cleaning of surfaces.
  • Final cleaning: After all asbestos in the work area has been removed or repaired and all work area surfaces have been fully cleaned with wet methods and HEPA vacuuming, we conduct an inspection and clearance air sampling that meets state and federal requirements. Work area barriers and air filtration are not removed until this clearance testing is complete and the work area meets all clearance criteria.
  • Post-cleanup: After clearance criteria is met, our team removes the work area containment barriers and recleans the work area using the HEPA vacuum unit once more. You will receive a final report outlining waste shipment records, permits, site logs and copies of all licensing, as well as copies of inspection results and laboratory analysis. These records must be kept for compliance with environmental regulations.
